Remember When...
A computer was something from a science fiction show?
Memory was something you lost with age [or MCS/CFS/FM] and a CD was a bank account?
A cursor used profanity and a keyboard was a musical instrument?
An application was for employment and a program was a TV show?
Log on meant adding wood to the fire and a hard drive was a long trip on the road?
You cut with a pocket knife and pasted with glue?
A web was a spider's home and a virus was the flu?
Taken from Focus on the Family, December 1999
We had quite a storm in Frazier Park last night. The wind blew in gusts, we had lightning and snow. Three times the electricity went off. I had three times to think about what I should do: get out the box of stuff (lantern, flashlights) I put away for a Y2k emergency and stay up awhile longer, or hop in bed before the house got cold. I also had three times to praise the Lord that our electricity did not shut down, temporarily, or for a long period of time on January 1st.
I also mused about how quickly everyone forgot their fears of catastrophe and went about their normal lives once they found out that the lights and telephone worked on January 1st. Mankind is really quite flexible. Stress and fear are not so damaging to health as people like to believe they are, even when the whole world was apprehensive about a coming time of chaos.
There were few reports of computer glitches in the newspaper caused by the change over from 1999 to 2000 in computers. Most of the extra staff in businesses and emergency crews working over the new years weekend were not needed. The extra billions of dollars of money which were dispersed to banks in case of a run on account withdrawals was subsequently packaged up and sent back to the Federal Reserve Bank.
I was delighted to see that the governments of so many countries planned giant firework celebrations, etc. to ring in the new year. And that so many people wanted to be part of them. I have read that there are more weddings and child births planned for the year 2000. And there have already been more deaths of elderly and terminally ill people in January compared to usual. It is believed that many of these people had consciously put forth great effort to stay alive just so that they could live to experience the year 2000.
With all this behind us, has mankind learned any lessons? I so enjoyed reading Pastor John Lindberg's (pastor of Eagle Rock Covenant Church and a board member of Share, Care and Prayer) recent article regarding this matter that I want to share it with you.
Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
By the time you read this, nearly all the questions about "what's really going to happen," come the changing of the year from 1999 to 2000, will have been answered in varying degrees.
If ever a society, even the world, has been humbled, it is now as even leading prognosticators admit 'we don't really know what's going to happen when the clock stricks twelve on New Year's eve.' Man creates a machine called a computer, and now the creator is not sure at all who is in control.
NASA brings a shuttle back (not taking any chances), airlines suspend some flights (just in case), people stockpile everything (so they have enough if something should happen), they buy record numbers of guns (to protect themselves and their property), and every available law enforcer will be on heightened alert (just to be sure).
Three clerks in stores in two days this week, asked me, "Are you ready for Y2k?" My response has been, "I'm more concerned about being ready for Jesus' return, than about Y2k." I don't intend to be flippant, but my personal feeling is one of disbelief as I read about and hear religious leaders imploring people to be ready for whatever might occur in the early days and weeks of the year 2000.
Now I'm not one who does not believe in preparedness. I grew up in a Scouting family and that motto is "Be Prepared." But frankly, the hyperbole to hoard and protect and stockpile all that is eventually going to burn up anyway, is beyond me.
I'm not looking for subscriptions to my perspective on this subject, but suffice it to say again, I am concerned that we are prepared to greet with open arms, our Savior when He splits the eastern sky with a cry of command for His bride to come forth. Much more concerned, in fact, than anxiously waiting for the fulfillment of Y2k with cupboard laden and money belt bulging, and at "cock pistol" readiness.
By the way, are YOU ready for His return? I mean, are you really ready? Do you know Christ is coming back? Do you know what it takes to be ready for Him? No, I don't know when He's coming. Jesus said,
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; then will appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven,...and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory;
"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, not the Son, but the Father only....Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming....Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Yes, He is coming back for His church. Do be prepared. What a great day it would be if the world was humbled by the uncertainty of Christ's return, to the degree we are being humbled in our inability to control what our computers are going to do when the calendar year changes. My, oh my.
Do have a blessed year in 2000 A.D., as together we seek His face, and do His will.
Pastor Jack
